Smart Rabbit Safety School started with the idea that we should all feel safe, and know how to be safe. Built on a unique foundation of training and experience, and a passion for the empowerment of others, Smart Rabbit exists to share with others the knowledge, skills, and peace of mind acquired through a career in education and public safety.

We educate and empower people through real-world training in situational awareness, conflict avoidance, and defense of home and self. Smart Rabbit is committed to safety in all facets of life and offers a unique and enjoyable training experience. Our participants, especially those with little to no prior training or experience, will learn new ideas, practices, and abilities that will apply every day, at work, at the grocery store, in the car, and at home.
Available classes include a one-day course on common and critical safety concepts and strategies, a custom, two-day extensive exploration of multiple concepts to keep your whole family safe, a full eight-hour Concealed Pistol License (CPL) certification course that meets all Michigan standards required to apply for a CPL, and a half-day, intermediate shooting course, to improve skills and safety on the range and beyond. The Rabbit & The Lynx
Imagine you are a rabbit. You live in harmony with your rabbit friends and family within the forest. Still, in your mind is FEAR, because you have been told of THE LYNX. Somewhere in the forest, the lynx can see you, hear you, even smell you, and if he finds you...
But what if you could learn more about the lynx? That he is clumsy and predictable? That the scary stories you were told had been exaggerated? What if you learned how to look and listen for the lynx, so you could see him coming a mile away? If you learned his smell, his habits, his routines? What if you learned how to trick, avoid, or escape the lynx?
With this knowledge of the forest, yourself, and your power, you realize that the lynx is nothing to fear, after all. You no longer hide in your rabbit hole, doubt yourself, or fear your environment. You are the rabbit who knows, though the lynx is out there, and though he is undeniably a threat, that YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN ENVIRONMENT, YOUR OWN SURVIVAL, YOUR OWN LIFE.
The story of the rabbit and the lynx was shared among the Wolastoqiyik Native American tribe. I first heard of this theme in the 1997 movie "The Edge" (though the film's producers changed Wolastoqiyik to Cree and lynx to panther). I was inspired by the idea of the SMART RABBIT, the one who has let go of fear and achieved peace, even as danger lurks.
We all feel fear, but when we understand the world around us, and we understand and embrace our ability to manage the threats within our world, then we have found true freedom.
ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Nate, an educator and safety advocate,
and the founder of Smart Rabbit Safety School
After teaching public school for three years, I left the classroom to embark on a career in law enforcement, where I have proudly served as a police officer for more than 21 years. I am an instructor with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and the Washtenaw County Community College Police Academy. I am also a certified Concealed Pistol License (CPL) instructor with the U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and a certified Violent Critical Incident (VCI) Response instructor through ALICE Active Shooter Response Training. In addition to my experience as an instructor of police officers and law enforcement students, I have also been a coach, a tutor, a camp counselor, and a youth mentor. The education and empowerment of others have always been in my heart. I created Smart Rabbit Safety School because I want to share with others the knowledge that I have learned throughout my career: strategies to face everyday threats in a modern world, the freedom in overcoming fear, and a life of confidence, self-reliance, and peace of mind.
